Drainage Solutions & Flood Control Engineering for Ghana
Flooding is one of the most damaging and recurring hazards facing Ghanaian cities. Accra, Kumasi, and other fast-growing urban centres across West Africa experience severe inundation during the rainy season — damaging property, disrupting livelihoods, and in some cases costing lives. The root cause is typically a combination of inadequate drainage infrastructure, encroachment on natural watercourses, and rapid imperviousness from urban development outpacing stormwater capacity.
As a flood control and drainage engineer based in Accra, I bring both design expertise and practical construction experience to these challenges. My work on stormwater systems spans detention pond design, open channel and U-drain construction, culvert sizing, site drainage layout, and earthwork grading to achieve positive drainage across sites. I have supervised flood control construction directly on site — ensuring that drainage structures are built to the correct alignment, slope, and concrete quality required for hydraulic performance.
Stormwater Management & Detention Pond Design
Detention ponds attenuate peak flood flows by temporarily storing runoff and releasing it at a controlled rate to the downstream drainage system. I design detention facilities including pond geometry, outlet structures, emergency spillways, and integration with downstream channels. For the Ranney Park Detention Improvement project in Lansing, Michigan, I established pond geometry, designed outlet structures and spillways, and incorporated aesthetic considerations for a public park setting — coordinating with surveyors on final grading and design details.
U-Drain Construction & Supervision in Accra
U-drains (precast or cast-in-situ roadside drains) are the workhorse of urban stormwater conveyance across Accra and Ghana's towns. Correct alignment, slope, and inlet provision are critical — poorly constructed U-drains back up, overflow, and accelerate road deterioration. At Punctum Construction Ltd, I supervised the construction of 1.1 km of roadside U-drains for stormwater conveyance in Accra, verifying concrete quality and reinforcement placement, and ensuring proper alignment and slope throughout construction.
Drainage Design & Site Layout
Effective site drainage begins at the design stage — establishing finished floor levels, grading away from buildings, sizing surface and underground drainage, and connecting to the public drainage network. I prepare site drainage layout plans using civil engineering software, including invert levels, pipe sizing, channel sections, and inlet locations. For residential and commercial developments in Accra, correct drainage design prevents ponding, protects foundations, and keeps access roads passable year-round.
Culvert Sizing for Flood Control
Undersized culverts are a leading cause of road flooding and embankment failure across Ghana. I calculate design storm runoff using rational method and catchment area analysis, size culvert openings to pass flood flows without surcharge, and design headwalls and energy dissipators to control erosion at outlets. I have sized reinforced concrete box culverts for road crossings in Accra, producing hydraulic calculations and design drawings for construction teams.
Flood Risk Assessment
Before development, clients benefit from understanding the flood risk on their site — whether from overland flow, river flooding, or undersized drainage. I carry out desktop flood risk assessments using topographic data and hydrological analysis to identify flood pathways and advise on mitigation measures, including raising finished levels, providing on-site attenuation, and protecting openings.
